Gloverall X Engineered Garments

Launching this month, our inaugural Gloverall x Engineered Garments collaboration sees a harmonious blend of both brands’ ethos combining heritage and quality with a very contemporary attitude.

Renowned for reworking classic styles into something new, Japanese-born US-based visionary behind Engineered Garments, Daiki Suzuki, takes our signature Gloverall Monty Duffle and re-engineers it with a fresh perspective to bring two new designs – the Side Vent Duffle and the Retractable Duffle.

Gloverall X Engineered Garments

Daiki Suzuki’s high-level detail aesthetic and sense of play is evident in both of the unique designs. Cut to an oversized, relaxed fit, the first of the two styles, the Side Vent Duffle features exposed press studs and innovative side vent openings that can be poppered open or closed to subtly change the shape of the coat. Elsewhere the versatile Retractable Duffle boasts the same exposed press studs down the length of the coat giving the option to secure the extendable lower contrast panel at knee length or release it for a longer look.

Made in Gloverall’s dedicated factory in the UK, both styles are crafted in our signature boiled wool blended with a contrasting lightly waxed cotton panel and feature all-black trims that introduce a contemporary take on the classic duffle codes. The functional interior leg straps to firmly keep the coat in place against the cold and additional backpack straps for easy carrying reinforce Engineered Garments’ utilitarian design approach.

We caught up with Daiki Suzuki to find out why he wanted to partner with Gloverall and his inspiration behind the capsule collection.

1. Why did you want to collaborate with Gloverall?

Gloverall and its original duffle coat design is well-known across Europe and Japan.

I grew up with the brand and always liked the duffle coat design with its historical military origins so saw no reason to miss an opportunity to collaborate. The Gloverall story and heritage along with the authentic designs, craft and quality aligns with our approach at Engineered Garments.

2. How would you describe your aesthetic?

It’s a balance between modern and classic

3. What was the idea/inspiration behind the designs?

Adding some typical Engineered Garments design twists to Gloverall’s Classic Monty coat such as mixing the traditional boiled wool fabric with a lightly waxed cotton panel and the exposed press stud detail.

4. What is about the duffle coat that lends itself to interesting design?

The duffle is a design classic; the simplicity of its cut, the oversized fit and unlined heavy wool material along with the original features like the instantly recognisable toggle fastener. And the military origin of the style gives it an interesting back story.

The Gloverall x Engineered Garments collection will be available to buy from the 19th October on gloverall.com and via engineeredgarments.com as well as the Nepenthes stores in New York, London and Tokyo.
